  Identity thieves can use your social security card to open new credit card accounts in your name and then create unknown amounts of charges on your behalf. 

Here are a few things you should purge from your wallet or purse immediately to limit your risk in case your wallet or handbag is lost or stolen.

1. Social Security Card-or the number written down anywhere. This is one of the worst items to carry around.
2. Checks-Only take what you need or use your debit/credit card. Or just take the right amount of cash you may need.
3. Passport or Birth Certificate-With these, they can be altered. And also they can be used to get a Social Security card.
4. Extra Keys-When you lose or if your handbag is stolen, thieves will then have you address. Also be careful of what you leave in your car when you hand your keys to a valet.
5. Extra Credit Cards-The more you carry means the more you may have to cancel if lost or stolen.
6. Receipts-can still be used for valuable information, and thieves can still play around with the credit card numbers they have on the receipts.
